The Medical-Dental Connection in Geriatric Oral Health

Presented by: Steve Shuman, DDS

Date: Thursday, September 24, 2026 Time: 6 pm to 7 pm Central Time on Zoom

Description: America's population is rapidly aging with more natural teeth and higher expectations of maintaining oral health than ever before. The growing recognition of the relationships between oral health and overall health now makes access to dental care for older adults even more critical. This webinar will review key oral health concerns for older adults, connections between oral and systemic health, and potential barriers to dental care for older adults, such as conditions like dementia, as well as resources to address them.

Bios: Dr. Steve Shuman grew up in Philly and earned his DDS from Temple University and then completed his Fellowship and MS degree in Geriatric Dentistry from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He joined Minnesota’s faculty in 1989 and is now Professor and Director of the school’s Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program as well as Director of the Division of Hospital & Special Care Dentistry. He also serves on the faculty for the school’s Special Healthcare Needs Clinic and the University’s HRSA-funded Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Expansion Program. Dr. Shuman served on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry for 10 years and then as President of that organization. He currently serves as Chair of the Minnesota Dental Association’s Barriers to Care Committee. His programs have been recognized nationally as well as at the state and local levels, including the American Dental Association’s Geriatric Oral Health Award and the Innovation Award from LeadingAge, the national association of non-profits representing the entire field of aging services. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and only the 8th dental professional to be inducted as a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America.

Learning objectives:

Describe key oral health problems and trends in our aging population.
Recognize the close interrelationship between oral and overall health in older adults.
Discuss special concerns and barriers to care for older adults and potential strategies to address them.
Identify resources available for the interprofessional team to help improve oral health for older adults.

Application has been made for 1.0 ANCC contact hours to Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit who is accredited as an Approver of Nursing Continuing Professional Development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Description: This conference explores spiritual care, end-of-life communication, and trauma-informed approaches for vulnerable populations. This activity equips faith community nurses with evidence-based strategies for holistic  practice, concluding with a vital focus on the healing power of sleep and self-care for the practitioner.
Outcomes: Upon completion of activities at this conference, learners will be able to:
1.     Describe 2 types of ministry that the FCN can provide to anyone they serve regardless of spiritual/religious beliefs.
2.      Identify 2 core principles for end-of-life communication with patients and families.
3.      Discuss 2 Trauma-Informed Care approaches when engaging vulnerable populations.
4.      Describe 2 evidence-based sleep hygiene strategies that nurses can implement.

This activity has been submitted to the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit for approval to award contact hours. The Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit is an accredited approver of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
