Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) has been in the news since Bruce Willis came public with his diagnosis. More importantly, FTD, which is also known as frontotemporal degeneration, is recognized as the most common cause of Alzheimer's under the age of 60. Scientists have discovered a genetic component, C9orf72, an autosomal dominant trait that demonstrates a familial link between FTD and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
