Description: This session will explore the nature of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its profound impact not only on individuals who experience it but also on the people who support them. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how PTSD affects relationships, particularly within families and close support systems. We will discuss the challenges that loved ones face, including the common tendency to over-accommodate or unintentionally enable unhealthy coping mechanisms. Participants will learn strategies for setting healthy boundaries, promoting resilience, and offering effective support while maintaining their own well-being. The session will provide practical tools to navigate the complexities of caregiving for someone with PTSD, ensuring that support systems can remain strong without sacrificing personal mental health.
Bio: Dr. Kovacevic is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist with specialized training in the assessment and treatment of trauma survivors and their supportive networks. She currently serves at the Road Home Program at Rush University, where she provides therapeutic services for individuals impacted by trauma, as well as their families and caregivers. Dr. Kovacevic holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tulsa and completed her clinical internship at the esteemed Cincinnati VA Medical Center, which included a specialized rotation at the Trauma Recovery Center.
